Chinese PM Li Qiang to Lead Economic Talks at SCO Summit

The visit of Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Islamabad is proceeding as planned, despite a recent terrorist attack in Karachi that claimed the lives of two Chinese nationals. Sources confirm that there is no change in the Chinese premier's visit schedule, which holds crucial importance for Pakistan's struggling economy. This marks the first visit of a Chinese prime minister to Pakistan in 11 years, with the two nations preparing to sign several agreements aimed at enhancing economic cooperation. The tragic incident in Karachi, however, casts a shadow over the visit, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to security for Chinese nationals in Pakistan. Previous attacks, such as the one in Besham that killed five Chinese engineers, led Pakistan to revisit security protocols, but concerns remain. Li Qiang's visit is seen as pivotal for further cooperation, including discussions on forming a joint security company to safeguard Chinese investments in Pakistan. Other SCO delegates, including the Russian and Indian foreign ministers, have also confirmed their participation in the summit, which is set to take place from October 15-16, with stringent security measures in place.
