Gwadar’s Water Supply Boost: Tajikistan Project Feasibility Complete

President Asif Ali Zardari has officially announced the completion of the feasibility study for a new water supply project that aims to provide Gwadar with water sourced from Tajikistan. This initiative is a major step toward tackling the city's ongoing water scarcity crisis, ensuring sustainable resources for its growing population and infrastructure expansion.

Speaking at the International Conference on ‘Regional Connectivity & Pakistan: Emerging Opportunities’, held at Aiwan-e-Sadr and organized by the Pakistan-China Institute, President Zardari highlighted the complexities of the water supply route. He revealed that the feasibility report has been submitted to the Chinese government, backed by UAE support, marking a regional collaboration effort in addressing Gwadar’s pressing needs.

The president also reinforced Pakistan’s commitment to regional connectivity, emphasizing that CPEC and Gwadar Port are pivotal in fostering trade and economic growth. He termed Pakistan a “natural trade corridor”, strategically positioned to link China, Central Asia, and the Middle East.

Additionally, Ahmed Jarwan Al Mohammed, President of the UAE-based Global Council of Tolerance and Peace, commended Pakistan’s efforts to enhance regional trade and cooperation. He stressed the importance of promoting tolerance, education, and business partnerships.

For years, Gwadar has faced acute water shortages, exacerbated by its expanding population and infrastructure demands. Pakistan and China have actively pursued long-term solutions, including the launch of a desalination plant and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in June 2023. This MoU focuses on water conservation, watershed planning, flood control, drought relief, and environmental protection, reinforcing bilateral cooperation for Gwadar’s sustainable future.
