The BRI Green and Low-Carbon Expert Network (GLEN), a global initiative dedicated to sustainable and low-carbon development under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), has officially launched in Beijing. Supported by China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE), the network unites experts worldwide to advance green policies and facilitate capacity building for environmentally sustainable development.
The inaugural session featured key dignitaries, including Zhao Yingmin, Vice Minister of MEE, Salvador Moncada, Ambassador of Honduras to China, Khalil Hashmi, Ambassador of Pakistan to China, and Erik Solheim, Co-Chair of the Europe-Asia Center. Their insights emphasized the importance of international cooperation in fostering a sustainable future under the BRI framework.
Mustafa Hyder Sayed, Executive Director of the Pakistan-China Institute, has been appointed as an inaugural member of GLEN, highlighting his contributions to green economic advocacy and sustainable development within the Belt and Road framework. This appointment reflects Pakistan’s leadership role in advancing global environmental initiatives and its strategic partnership with China in promoting low-carbon growth.
Aligned with President Xi Jinping’s eight pledges for high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, GLEN will design green policies, advise on project consultations, and establish standards for low-carbon development. The network’s efforts will focus on supporting BRI partner countries in environmental governance, policy formation, and ESG frameworks, thereby driving global green financing initiatives.
The launch ceremony underscored the shared commitment of diverse stakeholders—government leaders, industry experts, financial institutions, and academics—to accelerate the green transition. Mustafa Sayed’s appointment not only elevates Pakistan’s stature in global sustainability discussions but also strengthens its collaboration with China in achieving the Belt and Road’s environmental objectives.
