Pakistan has officially launched its second Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M Shushuk, in Wuhan, China, marking a significant step in its maritime defence strategy. The launch is part of an eight-submarine agreement signed in 2015 between Pakistan’s Defence Ministry and China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Company. Under the contract, four submarines are being built in China, while the remaining four will be constructed in Pakistan through a transfer of technology programme.
Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Ovais Ahmed Bilgrami, who attended the ceremony as the chief guest, underscored the strategic importance of these submarines in ensuring regional maritime security. He highlighted that the state-of-the-art Hangor-class vessels, equipped with advanced weapons and stealth capabilities, will significantly bolster Pakistan’s naval deterrence in the Indian Ocean.
Designed with low acoustic signatures, the Hangor-class submarines enhance Pakistan’s ability to conduct precision strikes at standoff distances, making them a critical asset in modern naval warfare. This project aligns with Pakistan’s broader efforts to modernise its naval fleet, following its acquisition of MILGEM-class corvettes from Türkiye and the upgrade of Agosta 90B-class submarines.
The induction of these submarines further cements Pakistan-China military cooperation, reflecting deepening strategic ties between the two nations. As Pakistan continues to strengthen its naval forces, these developments contribute to maintaining regional stability and ensuring a secure maritime environment.
