Gwadar Port, considered the crown jewel of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), remains underutilized despite its immense strategic potential. Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, highlighted its critical role in providing cost-effective trade routes for Gulf and Central Asian countries.
During a high-level meeting, attended by officials from multiple ministries and representatives from embassies, the minister pointed out the lack of marketing efforts and strategic planning. He emphasized that Central Asian states and neighboring countries could save up to 45% in transportation costs by utilizing Gwadar Port. However, no proactive measures have been taken to promote this competitive advantage.
The minister directed the concerned ministries to prepare a business plan within three days to operationalize the port. A detailed cost analysis for transshipment routes was assigned to the National Logistics Cell (NLC) to ensure competitive pricing and efficient logistics solutions.
Additionally, the meeting focused on promoting Gwadar as the most economical and efficient trade route, facilitating imports and exports between Gulf countries and China. The minister stressed the need for aggressive international marketing to position Gwadar as a thriving regional trade hub.
Key directives included the preparation of marketing materials showcasing cost-effective trade routes and potential incentives for international businesses. These materials will be distributed globally through embassies and missions. The minister also urged the Balochistan Mining Department to focus on exporting finished white marble, emphasizing value addition to boost mineral exports.
With a robust action plan, Gwadar aims to transform into a key regional transshipment hub, creating job opportunities and strengthening the regional economy.
