Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is set to inaugurate a new fleet of Chinese-made electric buses in Rawalpindi today, marking a significant step forward in the province’s efforts to modernize and green its public transport system.
According to official reports, the initiative is being carried out in partnership with leading Chinese manufacturers and technology firms. The project will see the phased introduction of 87 air-conditioned, zero-emission electric buses operating on four major routes across Rawalpindi.

In the initial phase, the buses will ply between Rawat and Motorway Chowk, providing passengers with a clean, affordable, and comfortable mode of transport. The fare has been fixed at Rs20 per ride, while students and senior citizens above 60 years of age will enjoy free travel privileges.
“This electric bus project is a major milestone in offering dignified, efficient, and eco-friendly urban mobility,” said PML-N Rawalpindi Division President Malik Abrar Ahmad. He added that the initiative would significantly reduce air pollution and traffic congestion, aligning with Punjab’s green development vision.
The project also reflects Pakistan’s broader climate partnership with China under the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), focusing on renewable energy, smart mobility, and sustainable urban growth. This collaboration underscores both nations’ shared commitment to creating a cleaner, more efficient, and inclusive future for urban commuters.
