Within the scope of the CPEC framework, Pakistan and China have jointly undertaken nine coal-based power generation projects. Currently, four of these projects, collectively providing 4,620MW of electricity to the national grid system, have been successfully commissioned through the Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB). Notably, these commissioned projects are: the 1,320MW Sahiwal Coal Power Project, the 1,320MW Port Qasim Coal Power Plant, the 1,320MW Hub Coal Power Plant, and the 660MW Thar Coal-based Engro Power Project.
The remaining five projects, with a total capacity of 3,600MW, are currently in various stages of implementation. These projects consist of the 330MW Thar Coal Project, another 1,320MW Thar Coal Project, a 330MW Thar Coal Project, a 300MW imported coal project, and the 1,320MW Thar Coal Project, which is part of the Indicative Generation Capacity Expansion Plan (IGCEP). Altogether, these initiatives contribute to a significant total capacity of 8,220MW for coal-based power generation within the CPEC framework.
