The Khunjerab Pass, connecting Pakistan with China and Central Asian States, has achieved a remarkable milestone with its year-round operation. Previously closed for five winter months due to heavy snowfall, the pass now remains open, boosting trade in the region.
This historic achievement, marking the first winter operation in 77 years, is a result of collaborative efforts between Pakistan and China, formalized during the third Belt and Road Forum in 2023. The Khunjerab Pass facilitates trade activities at an altitude of nearly 16,000 feet, enabling the transportation of machinery, textiles, electronics, food items, and more.
Significant infrastructure upgrades, including central heating systems and enhanced facilities by the National Logistic Corporation (NLC), have ensured uninterrupted trade even during harsh winters. The year-round operation strengthens trade relations not only with China but also with Central Asian States like Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan, fostering regional development.
The Khunjerab Pass milestone symbolizes progress and collaboration, paving the way for economic growth and deeper ties between neighboring countries.
