The Chinese Consul General, Yang Yundong, reaffirmed on Friday that China and Pakistan remain committed to completing the Karakoram Highway (KKH) and the Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway project. As vital components of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), these infrastructure initiatives are poised to enhance connectivity and economic integration.
Pakistan’s strong diplomatic and economic ties with China have led to several key investments, with CPEC serving as a "lifeline" for national development. In September last year, China pledged assistance for four major transportation and communication projects, including ML-1, M-6, and M-9, along with the second phase of KKH. Additionally, projects such as the Kaghan-Naran route, Babusar Top tunnel, and Jhal Khand expansion are progressing under joint collaboration.
Addressing the ‘Two Sessions for 2025’ event at the Consulate General of China, Yang emphasized the dedication of both nations to the timely execution of these projects. He also highlighted Gwadar’s strategic importance, noting that the completion of its new international airport in 2023 would boost trade by facilitating increased shipping activity at Gwadar Port.
Yang further stated that China continues to advance economic modernisation, with a projected GDP growth of 5% in 2024. He underscored China’s commitment to high-standard international cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), fostering global economic stability and mutual benefits.
As China and Pakistan mark the 10th anniversary of President Xi Jinping’s visit in 2025, alongside 75 years of diplomatic relations, both nations are expected to deepen their collaboration across multiple sectors. The ML-1 railway upgrade, a key pillar of CPEC, remains a priority, with renewed commitments from both governments to ensure its advancement.
