Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari addressed the 21st Council of Heads of Government (CHG) meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) today. China virtually hosted the event as the current SCO-CHG Chair. In attendance were Heads of Government from China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, alongside representatives from SCO Observer States.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari highlighted the crucial need to boost economic and trade ties among SCO Member States. He emphasized that enhancing connectivity across the SCO region could unlock its political and economic potential. He also emphasized how the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship Belt and Road Initiative project, aligns with SCO's vision of shared prosperity through regional integration.

Demonstrating Pakistan's commitment to the SCO, the Foreign Minister showcased the country's efforts to promote regional cooperation guided by the "Shanghai Spirit." He announced the upcoming inaugural meeting of the SCO Special Working Group on Poverty Alleviation, scheduled for December in Islamabad, and shared Pakistan's successful poverty alleviation initiatives.

The Foreign Minister expressed gratitude to SCO countries for their solidarity and support for flood-affected people in Pakistan. He stressed the importance of collective action to combat the devastating effects of Climate Change and urged developed nations to fulfill their Climate Finance commitments to assist developing countries in achieving sustainable development goals.

Emphasizing the significance of lasting peace and security for economic development, the Foreign Minister underscored the need to address terrorism in all its forms, including state-sponsored terrorism. He also highlighted the importance of continued practical engagement with Afghanistan to help the country address its humanitarian and economic challenges.

The CHG, the second highest SCO forum, serves as a platform for Member States' Heads of Government to exchange views and provide policy guidance on regional and global issues. It focuses on regional connectivity, economic integration, and socio-cultural and humanitarian cooperation among Member States.
