In a landmark move to deepen bilateral ties, Pakistan and China have formalized a new partnership agreement that will enhance economic cooperation and bolster the "Uraan Pakistan" initiative — a strategic roadmap aiming to elevate Pakistan to a $1 trillion economy by 2035. The agreement was sealed during high-level talks between Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, and Lu Hao, President of China’s Development Research Center (DRC) and Centre for International Knowledge on Development (CIKD).
The collaboration is set to focus on pivotal sectors such as trade, energy, infrastructure, and digital transformation. As part of the agreement, both nations will engage in joint economic research, capacity-building programmes, and knowledge exchange initiatives. These efforts are expected to accelerate Pakistan’s economic growth trajectory and align with its long-term development goals.
Minister Iqbal underlined the strategic importance of learning from China’s successful export-led growth model, adding that such cooperation will reinforce Pakistan’s economic resilience. He pointed to positive economic indicators, including a significant drop in the policy rate from 23% to 11%, and the Pakistan Stock Exchange crossing the 140,000-point mark — milestones that reflect a shift in investor confidence and macroeconomic stability.
Iqbal also emphasized that Pakistan’s share in China’s $2 trillion annual import market remains minimal. Tapping into this potential is a top priority under Uraan Pakistan’s export-driven framework. He acknowledged the previous setbacks caused by political turbulence and policy inconsistency but expressed confidence that the country’s new vision will drive sustained development.
Lu Hao echoed this optimism, stating that China remains committed to supporting Pakistan’s strategic ambitions. Both sides agreed that this strengthened economic collaboration represents a critical step toward realizing shared goals under the broader China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework.
