The Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) has resumed water supply from Shadi Kaur Dam, adding two million gallons per day (MGD) to the city’s network after a gap of nearly three and a half years. The restored 83-kilometer pipeline was reactivated under the directives of Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti, with oversight from GDA Director General Moin-ur-Rehman Khan and senior engineering staff.
This milestone follows the chief minister’s recent decision to transfer Gwadar’s water distribution system to GDA, which has since accelerated new household connections and encouraged residents to apply promptly. The move comes as the city struggles with severe water scarcity, worsened by prolonged drought. With Ankara Dam already dry and Sawad Dam nearing depletion, Shadi Kaur’s contribution offers timely relief.
Parallel efforts are underway to diversify supply, including a 1.2 MGD desalination plant, a 0.5 MGD sensor boring project, and the China-assisted 1.2 MGD desalination facility at the Gwadar Port Authority under CPEC. Together with Shadi Kaur’s restored flow, these initiatives are expected to bring Gwadar’s daily requirement of 3.5 MGD within reach, providing residents with long-awaited stability in water availability.
