Caretaker Federal Minister for Planning, Muhammad Sami Saeed, recently chaired the Progress Review Meeting of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects. Dr. Muhammad Nadeem Javaid, Chief Economist and Head of CPEC Secretariat, provided a comprehensive update on completed, ongoing, and future CPEC projects, building on the successful first decade of the initiative.
In attendance were Syed Zafar Ali Shah, Secretary for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, along with CPEC Secretariat officials. Dr. Javaid emphasized CPEC's transformative impact on Pakistan's economy, highlighting key energy and infrastructure projects that have enhanced energy security, improved connectivity, and bolstered trade between Pakistan and China.
Dr. Nadeem Javaid detailed the extensive trade routes under CPEC and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), spanning from Gwadar Port in Pakistan's Baluchistan province through major cities like Quetta, Sukkur, Lahore, Islamabad, and into China's Xinjiang region.
The briefing also covered the successful industrial collaboration between China and Pakistan, including the establishment of special economic zones (SEZs) and increased Chinese investment, particularly in manufacturing. This collaboration has spurred industrialization, job creation, and enhanced export capacity in Pakistan.
Additionally, Dr. Nadeem discussed plans for CPEC Phase-II, Gwadar Development Institute (GDI), and South-South Cooperation. He highlighted President Xi's recent statement, conveyed by Vice Premier He Lefeng, emphasizing new corridors: the Growth Corridor, Innovation Corridor, Green Corridor, Corridor of livelihoods, and Opening up Corridor. These initiatives aim to diversify the economy, promote innovation, and facilitate technology transfer.
The Federal Minister expressed unwavering commitment to maintaining the momentum of CPEC projects and accelerating progress where necessary. He emphasized that the caretaker regime has been entrusted with prioritizing developmental initiatives, with CPEC at the forefront. The Federal Minister urged all relevant departments and ministries to work in synergy to ensure timely economic benefits for the nation, underscoring CPEC's pivotal role in regional and national development.
