Pakistan and China to Build High-Tech Aquaculture Hub in Gwadar

In a significant move toward boosting coastal development, Chairman of China Overseas Ports Holding Company (COPHC), Professor Yu Bo, has proposed a strategic plan to establish a high-tech aquaculture industry in Gwadar. The proposal was presented during a meeting with Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry.

The ambitious plan envisions a technologically advanced, environmentally sustainable aquaculture sector that would transform Gwadar into a key component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). According to a press release, the project is set to capitalise on Gwadar’s abundant marine resources and strategic coastal position.

Minister Junaid Chaudhry welcomed the initiative, calling it a milestone for Pakistan’s maritime development. He emphasised its potential to drive economic growth by creating employment opportunities, attracting foreign investment, and boosting seafood exports. “This aquaculture project will position Gwadar as a pivotal seafood processing and export hub,” he noted.

The minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting industrial development through essential infrastructure upgrades, including reliable electricity, clean water, and improved road networks. These efforts, he said, are critical to facilitating sustainable industrial activity in coastal regions.

Highlighting Gwadar’s ideal sea conditions and proximity to global markets, the minister stressed the importance of establishing hatcheries, modern seafood processing units, and aquaculture farms that align with international quality standards. He pointed out that the initiative would significantly improve food security and broaden Pakistan’s export base.

Both Pakistan and China reaffirmed their dedication to ongoing coordination via technical experts and government departments to ensure successful project execution. The collaboration reflects a shared vision for responsible economic growth and environmental stewardship.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs reaffirmed its openness to business proposals that align with Pakistan’s long-term maritime and environmental priorities, particularly those focused on unlocking the full potential of the country’s blue economy.
