With the support of Thar Foundation, 18 students from the Government Polytechnic Institute (GPI) Mithi have embarked on a transformative academic journey to China under a Dual Diploma programme, opening new avenues for global education and technical skill development.
GPI Mithi offers a three-year Diploma of Associate Engineering (DAE) in mining, electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering disciplines. The institute currently has more than 300 students enrolled across these programmes, including 13 women admitted for the first time, reflecting gradual progress toward greater inclusion in technical education. Under the Dual Diploma initiative, selected students will complete the final year of their three-year diploma at Pingdingshan University in Henan Province, China.
An appreciation ceremony was organized by Thar Foundation to mark the students’ departure and recognize their achievement. The event was attended by representatives from the Sindh Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (STEVTA), TANG International, GPI Mithi, as well as the students and their families. Speakers praised the students’ dedication and encouraged them to make the most of the academic and professional opportunities ahead.
Addressing the gathering, General Manager Thar Foundation Farhan Ansari reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to strengthening vocational and technical skills to empower the youth of Thar. He highlighted that students enrolled in the mining-focused Dual Diploma programme are receiving scholarships jointly supported by STEVTA and TANG International. To better prepare them for industrial environments and cross-cultural learning, the students have also undergone Chinese language training prior to their departure.
For many participants, the programme represents a life-changing opportunity. “Studying abroad was once an impossible dream for students like us,” shared one of the departing students. “Thar Foundation has turned that dream into reality.”
