The Government of Balochistan took a significant step on Monday by appointing Professor Dr. Abdul Razzaq Sabir as the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University of Gwadar. This decision marked the realisation of a longstanding aspiration of the Gwadar community, who had eagerly awaited the establishment of a dedicated university in their region to facilitate higher education.

As per the official notification issued by the Secretariat Governor Balochistan, Dr. Razzaq Sabir assumed the role of Vice-Chancellor for a three-year term, in accordance with the University of Gwadar Act, 2018 (Section 54(3) read with Section 14(1)).

The Balochistan Provincial Assembly had previously passed the "University of Gwadar Bill, 2018" with the objective of elevating the Gwadar Campus of the University of Turbat (UoT) into an independent university in the southwest part of Balochistan.

Prof. Dr. Abdul Razzaq Sabir, who also served as the first VC and founder of UoT, initially proposed the establishment of a UoT sub-campus in Gwadar back in 2015. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan granted official recognition to the Gwadar sub-campus in July 2016, with academic operations commencing in January 2017, offering four programs spanning four departments.

The University of Gwadar is poised to become a hub of knowledge dissemination across various fields, including science and technology, engineering, arts and humanities, marine sciences, port management, social sciences, administration and management, law, medicine, agriculture, and other high-demand subjects. It aims to serve not only the Gwadar District of Makran Division but also the broader Balochistan region and other parts of the country.

Born in 1954 in the Kalat district of Balochistan, Professor Sabir boasts a rich legacy of four decades of involvement in education, history, literature, and culture. Additionally, he is a celebrated poet in the Brahui language.

The people of Balochistan, particularly those in Gwadar, have warmly embraced the establishment of the University of Gwadar and the appointment of Dr. Sabir as its Vice-Chancellor, heralding a new era of educational opportunities and progress in the region.
