The New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA), a flagship project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), is set to begin international flights to Muscat on January 10, 2025. This milestone signifies a major step toward transforming Gwadar into a global transit hub, with vast implications for regional trade and connectivity.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the NGIA as a symbol of the strong and lasting friendship between Pakistan and China. He expressed gratitude to China for building a state-of-the-art airport that aligns with international aviation standards. The operationalization of the NGIA is expected to boost Gwadar's prosperity by creating job opportunities and integrating the region into global trade networks.
Spanning the largest area among all airports in Pakistan, NGIA is designed to accommodate large-scale operations and even the Airbus A-380. With an annual capacity of 400,000 passengers, it features modern facilities tailored to international standards, ensuring seamless operations.
Beyond passenger travel, the NGIA is poised to serve as a key logistics hub. The airport will offer cold storage facilities, cargo warehouses, and courier services. Additionally, commercial developments such as hotels and shopping malls are planned to further enhance the economic potential of the region.
To complement its aviation capabilities, the government is prioritizing infrastructure development, particularly road networks connecting the NGIA to Gwadar port and other key locations. The East-Bay Expressway, which links the airport to critical areas, is already operational, with plans for expansion underway.
The government is also in talks with international airlines to launch additional routes, which will further solidify the NGIA's position as a strategic regional hub. With a focus on both passenger and cargo services, the NGIA is set to attract substantial investment and elevate Pakistan's global trade relations.
The NGIA is not just an airport but a catalyst for Gwadar’s development, unlocking vast economic potential for the region. With its planned international operations and robust infrastructure, it promises to redefine Pakistan’s trade and aviation landscape.
