Mujeeb Ur Rehman Qambrani, Director General of the Gwadar Development Authority (GDA), envisions Gwadar Port as a radiant gem in the region's crown. He unveiled exciting developments in a recent presentation to Punjab's business community, sharing the news that the grand Gwadar International Airport, slated to open in September 2023, will connect the city to major Pakistani and global cities.
Qambrani highlighted Gwadar Port's expansion, readying itself to receive vessels of up to 70,000 metric tons. In a significant move, Gwadar will soon join the national power grid, reducing reliance on Iranian electricity through a signed agreement for a 100MW power supply. Additionally, a 300MW coal power plant is under construction to address immediate electricity needs. An investment conference in Gwadar aims to attract manufacturing investments to the area.
The DG also unveiled plans for an International Seafood hub in Gwadar's picturesque West Bay, transforming it into a prime tourist destination. He addressed concerns of new allottees through the formation of a dispute resolution committee. Qambrani painted a compelling picture of Gwadar's future, foreseeing its emergence as a pivotal corridor for energy, trade, and logistics, potentially serving 70% of the world.
To engage with businesses from other regions, Qambrani visited various industrial associations and chambers in Lahore. He also sought to woo investors at the Pakistan Auto Show 2022. Two new dams and desalination plants have been established to meet the city's water needs, addressing previous shortages. Gwadar enjoys tax benefits for business and industrial activities, alongside a special economic zone and streamlined decision-making processes through a flat management system. A single-window system for investors is on the horizon.
Qambrani reiterated the nation's commitment to Gwadar Port's development, destined to shine as a regional beacon. He emphasized that Gwadar's progress would not only stem from port industries but also from the creation of export processing zones, fostering harmonious development and exemplifying the Belt and Road Initiative's success.
Acknowledging the role of the armed forces in safeguarding CPEC projects, Qambrani stressed the paramount importance of safety. Business representatives concurred, viewing Gwadar as the epicenter of CPEC's potential to alleviate the nation's economic challenges. They expressed their willingness to invest in Gwadar if the Balochistan government ensures law and order, simplifies business procedures, resolves land disputes, and accelerates infrastructure development.
