Hunan University of Medicine (HNUM) in China recently honored Pakistani scientist Professor Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary by naming its newly-inaugurated research building after him. This remarkable gesture underscores Dr. Choudhary's invaluable contributions to medical sciences and symbolizes the deepening scientific collaboration between Pakistan and China. As the first Pakistani scientist to receive this honor at HNUM, Dr. Choudhary's recognition marks a historic moment in the realm of Sino-Pak research partnerships.
Dr. Choudhary has been instrumental in establishing multiple Sino-Pak research centres, which are pivotal to advancing collaborative scientific initiatives. His distinguished career has earned him numerous awards, including the Mustafa (Peace Be Upon Him) Prize and high-ranking Civil Awards such as the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Sitara-i-Imtiaz, and Tamgha-i-Imtiaz. In 2022, his contributions were further acknowledged with China’s prestigious Friendship Award and the Golden Silkball Friendship Award. Currently, he holds the position of Vice President for Central & South Asia at The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in London.
The newly established research facility, covering 13,000 square feet, will support 17 full-time researchers dedicated to enhancing joint scientific projects between Pakistan and China. Founded in 1912 by Yan Fuqing, a renowned medical educator, HNUM stands as a leading public medical institution under the Hunan Provincial Department of Education. It boasts two campuses—Jinxi and Jinhai—with a combined area of 945,300 square meters, serving a student body of 14,425 and a faculty of 4,642. HNUM offers a comprehensive array of 20 undergraduate and graduate medical programs, underscoring its commitment to advancing medical education and research.
