Strengthening China-Pakistan Engineering Ties: Young Engineers Exchange Program

The China-Pakistan Young Engineers Exchange Program, held in Beijing from December 22-26, brought together experts and young engineers from both nations to explore cutting-edge engineering solutions in hydropower and water management. Organized by the Chinese Society of Engineers and supported by the Chinese National Committee on Large Dams and the Pakistan Engineering Council, the program aimed to strengthen ties and foster mutual learning between China and Pakistan’s engineering communities.

The five-day event featured expert lectures, interactive discussions, and field visits to hydropower stations. With a strong focus on practical knowledge, the program sought to connect engineering theory with real-world applications, addressing critical challenges in energy generation. A standout presentation came from Moaaz Awan of the Karot Hydropower Project, who highlighted the potential of floating photovoltaic systems to alleviate Pakistan’s energy shortages while conserving arable land.

Aliyan Syed from the Bhasha Hydropower Project emphasized the importance of pumped storage as a transformative technology for Pakistan’s energy infrastructure. By stabilizing the energy grid and integrating renewable energy sources, pumped storage could significantly reduce the country’s dependency on fossil fuels.

Nearly 40 engineers from over 20 Chinese and Pakistani institutions engaged in comprehensive discussions covering dam safety, energy storage, and new power systems. The event underscored the long-standing cooperation between the two countries, building on the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Chinese Society of Engineers and Pakistan Engineering Council. This exchange has further solidified China and Pakistan’s commitment to engineering collaboration, fostering innovation in the hydropower sector for energy security and economic growth.
