Accelerating Dasu Hydropower Project with WAPDA and China

Chairman WAPDA, Lt. Gen. (Retd) Muhammad Saeed, and Liu Huailiang, Chairman of China Gezhouba Group International Engineering Co. Ltd. (CGGC), led their respective delegations in a high-level meeting focused on accelerating the Dasu Hydropower Project (DHPP), a cornerstone of Pakistan’s energy strategy.

The discussions, held at the WAPDA Mega Hydel Projects Complex in Islamabad, centered on actionable measures to expedite construction. CGGC International serves as the main contractor for the DHPP, reinforcing the project’s strategic collaboration between Pakistan and China.

Highlighting the significance of the project, the WAPDA chairman urged CGGC to allocate additional resources and enhance on-ground operations to ensure timely completion. He reaffirmed WAPDA’s commitment to full contractual support to meet all project milestones.

DHPP, a major run-of-river hydropower initiative on the Indus River, is located roughly 7 kilometers upstream of Dasu town in Upper Kohistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The project lies 74 kilometers downstream of the planned Diamer Basha Dam and 345 kilometers from Islamabad. Once completed, DHPP will produce 4,320 MW of electricity in two phases. Stage I, currently under construction, will contribute 2,160 MW to Pakistan’s national grid through six units of 360 MW each, generating an estimated 12,222 GWh annually. The first stage is expected to be operational within five years, significantly boosting the country’s long-term energy security.
