Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal has praised the Suki Kinari (SK) Hydropower Station as a landmark achievement of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and a major step in the nation’s transition toward renewable energy.

Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad to mark its first anniversary of commercial operations, the minister highlighted the project’s strong performance over the past year. He noted that the hydropower station has consistently supplied clean electricity, diversified Pakistan’s energy mix, reduced reliance on imported fuels, and strengthened national energy security.
Ahsan Iqbal reaffirmed the government’s support for the project, pledging enhanced safety measures and deeper cooperation with China in the energy sector. Shi Yuanqiang, Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, called the SK Hydropower Station a flagship CPEC initiative that reflects the success of bilateral collaboration in green energy. He added that China is committed to advancing an upgraded version of CPEC with a focus on sustainability.
Shah Jahan Mirza, Managing Director of the Private Power and Infrastructure Board, also underscored the project’s vital role in boosting economic growth and energy security. Since beginning operations on September 14, 2024, the hydropower station has delivered 2.8 billion kWh of clean electricity to the national grid and created more than 100 local jobs.
