Shori-1 Tunnel Excavation Commences Under Dasu Hydropower Project

The Dasu Hydropower Project (Dasu HPP) has achieved a significant construction milestone with the successful commencement of excavation work on the Shori-1 Tunnel, part of the Dasu KKH-02 Realignment Road Project. Energy China Pakistan announced on January 14 that the progress was marked by the first controlled blast carried out on December 29, 2025, formally launching tunneling activities for the approximately 530-metre-long tunnel.

According to the company, the excavation is being undertaken in complex geological conditions, requiring the application of advanced engineering methods and stringent safety protocols. Despite the challenges, the project team is implementing modern tunneling techniques to ensure smooth and steady progress while maintaining high safety standards for workers and surrounding infrastructure.

The 4,320-megawatt Dasu Hydropower Project, currently under construction, is Pakistan’s largest hydropower initiative in terms of annual energy generation. Once completed, Stage-I of the project is expected to supply around 12 billion units of electricity per year, while Stage-II will contribute an additional 9 billion units to the national grid. Combined, the project will generate approximately 21 billion units of indigenous, clean, green, and affordable electricity annually, playing a vital role in strengthening Pakistan’s energy security and supporting sustainable development.
