A major afforestation initiative has been launched along the Kunhar River as part of ongoing environmental sustainability efforts linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) hydropower development in northern Pakistan.
SK Hydro Private Limited recently began its eighth annual tree plantation campaign near the Suki Kinari Hydropower Project, reinforcing the integration of environmental protection with clean energy generation. The campaign reflects the broader ecological vision associated with Chinese investment in Pakistan’s hydropower sector, demonstrating how major infrastructure projects are increasingly aligning with green development principles.
Held under the theme “Beautify the Kunhar River Bank, Build a Green Power Station Together,” the plantation drive took place in collaboration with local government authorities, the forestry department, environmental protection agencies and the project’s operations and maintenance contractor. During the campaign, participants planted thousands of saplings across surrounding hillsides and riverbanks to enhance ecological resilience and strengthen environmental protection around the hydropower facility.
Officials involved in the initiative said that since the programme began, more than 160,000 trees have been planted in the region. These efforts have significantly improved the ecological environment around the Suki Kinari project site, which is one of the flagship clean-energy ventures supported by Chinese investment under CPEC.
Environmental experts note that afforestation activities play an important role in addressing soil erosion and stabilizing slopes in mountainous terrain. The plantation campaign also aims to enhance biodiversity across the Kunhar River basin, while helping to protect nearby communities and critical project infrastructure from environmental risks.
Beyond environmental protection, the initiative reflects a broader commitment to sustainable development within Pakistan-China energy cooperation. Over the years, the continuous plantation campaigns have gradually revitalized the natural landscape around the project area, improving vegetation cover and strengthening ecological balance in the region.
The Suki Kinari Hydropower Project represents the largest greenfield hydropower investment undertaken overseas by China Energy Engineering Corporation. It also stands as the biggest hydropower venture developed abroad by the company, highlighting the scale of cooperation between Pakistan and China in the renewable energy sector.
The hydropower station officially commenced commercial operations on September 14, 2024, marking a significant milestone in bilateral energy collaboration. Since becoming operational, the project has generated more than 3.1 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity, contributing to Pakistan’s transition toward renewable energy while helping diversify and optimize the country’s overall energy mix.
