The Khunjerab Pass, situated in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, has officially transitioned to year-round operations, marking a significant development in Sino-Pakistan trade relations. Previously open only from April to November, the pass is now operational throughout the year, eliminating seasonal closures caused by harsh weather conditions at its high-altitude location of nearly 5,000 meters above sea level.
This strategic move aligns with commitments made during the 2023 Belt and Road Forum, reflecting the growing importance of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. By October this year, over 50,000 passenger trips, 11,000 vehicles, and 40,900 tons of goods had passed through the port, showcasing a sharp year-on-year growth of 42.6% in traffic and 72.7% in cargo volume.
As a critical trade hub, Khunjerab Pass links China and Pakistan, facilitating the import of textiles, agricultural products, and commodities, while exporting plants and herbs. Between 2016 and 2020, the port handled over 200,000 tons of trade cargo. This upgrade not only strengthens economic ties but also enhances cultural exchanges, further solidifying its role as a gateway to South Asia and Europe.
