CPEC Expansion to Afghanistan Gains Trilateral Backing

In a significant diplomatic development, China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan have jointly reaffirmed their commitment to extending the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into Afghanistan as part of the broader Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This trilateral initiative was emphasized during a high-level meeting in Beijing attended by Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.

The three leaders engaged in a comprehensive dialogue aimed at fostering enhanced regional cooperation through greater communication and trust. The meeting highlighted the importance of using the trilateral platform to promote regional peace, strengthen development goals, and pursue a shared vision of connectivity.

Recognising improvements in Afghanistan’s security landscape, the ministers underlined the vital role of economic integration and infrastructure connectivity in ensuring sustainable growth for the region. All three parties also stressed the importance of continued diplomacy and on-ground collaboration under the trilateral mechanism.

Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering ties with Afghanistan, particularly in areas such as trade, transit, healthcare, and cross-border connectivity. Meanwhile, China voiced its unwavering support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national dignity of both Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The meeting concluded with a strong consensus on the need for intensified security cooperation to counter terrorism and external threats that hinder regional development. A joint stance was reiterated against all forms of terrorism, underscoring the shared resolve to maintain peace and stability across borders.

It was mutually agreed that the 6th Trilateral Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will be convened in Kabul at an appropriate and early date.
