Pakistan Eager to Expedite China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Initiatives


Chairperson of the Senate Special Committee on the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Senator Sherry Rehman, emphasized the urgency of advancing CPEC projects during her meeting with representatives from the Bureau-I (South and Southeast Asian Affairs) of the International Department Central Committee of the Chinese People’s Congress. Pakistan's strong commitment to bolstering bilateral relations was a central theme of the discussion.

Senator Rehman stressed the importance of maintaining equilibrium in the bilateral relationship and ensuring the Chinese side receives maximum facilitation. She also mentioned that Pakistan eagerly awaits the upcoming Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) meeting scheduled for the second quarter of the next year in Islamabad. This high-profile event will bring together esteemed dignitaries from both China and Pakistan.

Senator Sherry Rehman underscored the significance of the JCC, characterizing it as a pivotal exercise conducted by the Chinese government. She highlighted how it leads to constructive discussions and agreements, driving positive developments within CPEC and other mutual projects. She urged Pakistan to enhance its preparations, both at the federal and provincial levels, to maximize the benefits of such interactions.

Furthermore, Senator Rehman revealed plans for the Senate Special Committee on CPEC to visit Gwadar soon, where they will oversee ongoing progress and infrastructural development. Their aim is to actively engage with and integrate the local population into these projects.

Senator Rehman also emphasized that CPEC encompasses more than just energy and infrastructure, emphasizing its substantial contributions to the welfare and inclusion of the local community. The meeting covered a wide range of topics, including economic and political situations, accountability, climate change, and the ongoing smog crisis. Both sides agreed to strengthen their cooperation to effectively address these pressing challenges.
