Zardari’s China Visit Boosts CPEC with Innovation & Green Growth
President Asif Ali Zardari’s visit to China has reinforced the unwavering partnership between Islamabad and Beijing, dispelling concerns about the resilience of their ties. During his meetings with President Xi Jinping and other top officials, Zardari emphasized Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and highlighted its pivotal role in regional development.
Recent economic pressures and security threats had raised doubts about the progress of CPEC. However, both nations reaffirmed their dedication to advancing high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, with a focus on innovation, green growth, and infrastructure development. A joint statement outlined ambitious plans, including the development of multiple economic corridors aligned with Pakistan’s 5Es framework.

The discussions also addressed security concerns following a series of attacks on Chinese personnel in Pakistan. Zardari assured Beijing that ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals and projects remains a top priority. In response, China reiterated its confidence in Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts and pledged further support to enhance security cooperation.
Gwadar’s development was a key focus, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to fully operationalizing the port and inaugurating the new Gwadar International Airport. Recognizing its strategic significance, they emphasized Gwadar’s role as a regional trade and logistics hub.
Additionally, Pakistan formally requested China to reschedule $3.4 billion in debt, a move aimed at stabilizing its economy. Beijing responded positively, reinforcing its long-term financial support for Islamabad.
The visit also underscored Pakistan’s endorsement of China’s global initiatives, including the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and the Global Security Initiative (GSI). Both sides pledged to enhance cooperation on global challenges, further cementing their diplomatic synergy.
As the visit concludes, it marks a renewed phase in Pakistan-China relations. With strengthened economic, security, and diplomatic commitments, both nations continue to forge a path of mutual prosperity and strategic collaboration.
